When it comes to General Motors protecting your privacy, our work is never done. For the past several months, we’ve been reworking our privacy practices and controls to make them easier to find and understand. In that spirit, we're sending the email below to GM accountholders and U.S. customers of our connected services, letting them know that we’ve consolidated many of our U.S. privacy statements into a single, simpler statement.
Today’s vehicles are safer and smarter than ever before. Connected services not only bring you better navigation, communications, entertainment and performance; they also help reduce crashes, emissions, and road congestion.
We know you count on us to earn and keep your trust. Led by our new Chief Trust and Privacy Officer, Alisa Bergman, we’ve rewritten our privacy statement to accomplish a few important things:
It’s important to note that these updates don’t give us permission to collect any new kinds of personal information or share it with anyone new. We’re simply making our privacy statements even easier to navigate and read.
Beyond the updated privacy statement, we’ve made enhancements to the OnStar enrollment process. We’ve added more information to the emails customers receive when they enroll, including links to the privacy statement and user terms as well as instructions on where they can manage their account's communication preferences, services, and settings. In addition, we’ve reminded dealers of the important role they play in helping to ensure customers are aware of the privacy statement, the user terms and the choices they can make about vehicle connectivity and communication preferences.
"These enhancements to both GM’s privacy statement and its practices will help drivers make thoughtful decisions about uses of their personal information," said Jules Polonetsky, CEO of Future of Privacy Forum. We consulted with FPF on these updates and appreciate their input.
We’ll keep working to raise the bar on privacy, and we’ll keep you posted on our progress.
