GM Drives Texas: New documentary celebrates Arlington Assembly
2024-11-27
A new documentary from a surprising source takes a close look at the wide-spread social and economic contributions made by the General Motors Arlington Assembly plant in suburban Dallas.
Produced by the City of Arlington, Texas, the 45-minute film “Heartbeat of Arlington” features archival footage, extensive research, and interviews with GM team members and others gathered over 21 months. The film takes viewers on a journey from the construction of the plant in the early 1950s through its evolution in vehicle production to the current day.
Arlington Assembly has built some of GM’s most iconic cars – like the Chevrolet Bel Air, the Pontiac GTO and the Buick Regal. The plant now assembles our best-selling full-size SUVs – the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade. Over the last 70 years, GM has assembled 13 million vehicles in Arlington.
“General Motors was the catalyst that made Arlington be the first city that exploded and became the DFW region,” Victor Vandergriff, son of Tom Vandergriff, who was mayor of Arlington in the 1950s when GM decided to locate a new manufacturing plant in the region, says in the film.
GM employs over 8,370 people in Texas – including 5,200 at Arlington Assembly. GM pays $1.2 billion in taxable wages to employees in the state; the company has invested $1.9 billion in Texas over the past 10 years alone.
The film can be viewed in its entirely on YouTube.
