Rugged but brainy: 5 technologies that drive the GMC HUMMER EV

2024-10-23

As the automotive industry shifts toward electrification, the GMC HUMMER EV Pickup and SUV stand out from the crowd with bold styling, all-electric powertrains and an array of cutting-edge technologies.

Here’s a look at five innovations that make the GMC HUMMER EV a true game-changer.

Extract Mode

The HUMMER EV’s Extract Mode1 is made for off-road situations when maximum ground clearance is required. When engaged, the vehicle’s ride height will rise by six inches, thanks to the Air Ride Adaptive suspension system. This additional ground clearance helps drivers traverse rocks, ruts, and steep inclines with sharp breakover angles.

UltraVision

Part of the HUMMER EV’s Extreme Off-Road Package, the vehicle’s UltraVision2 technology provides 18 camera views on the pickup and 17 camera views on the SUV, providing drivers with visibility all around the vehicle, including underneath. UltraVision is designed to help drivers navigate in difficult parking situations or for off-roading. The two underbody cameras let drivers monitor wheelspin and tire placement right from the driver’s seat.

Off-Road App

The HUMMER EV’s Off-Road app serves as a visual companion when off-roading, displaying the vehicle’s pitch and roll angles, suspension deflection, motor torque output, steering angle, g-forces, and current elevation. The app, which can be accessed by tapping the Off-Road icon on the HUMMER EV’s infotainment screen, also records the highest value achieved in each of those measurements. Some widgets from the Off-Road app can be displayed on the digital instrument cluster for easy monitoring while you drive.

Watts to Freedom

Watts to Freedom3 is a performance drive mode available on HUMMER EV Pickup and SUV models that unlocks the full potential of the propulsion system to put all of the available power to the pavement. When Watts to Freedom is engaged, the Air Ride Adaptive Suspension lowers, and the chassis and cooling system prepare for launch. This mode enables acceleration from zero to 60 mph in as little as three seconds4 on the Pickup and 3.5 seconds on the SUV.

4-Wheel Steer and CrabWalk

The HUMMER EV’s 4-Wheel Steer system enables all four wheels to work together for a smaller turning circle and improved maneuverability. The system also enables CrabWalk5, a GMC-exclusive feature that, at low speeds, allows the angle of the rear wheels to mimic the angle of the front wheels. This allows for diagonal movement of the vehicle and can provide additional options for drivers when they need to maneuver in tight spaces.
