GM extends Southwestern Athletic Conference sponsorship
2024-10-31
General Motors has extended its exclusive automotive sponsorship of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, which includes 12 historically black colleges and universities.
The GM sponsorship, which began in 2021, includes championship games, scholarships, and esports gaming labs, as well as workforce readiness training and recruitment.
GM’s role as a sponsor aligns with our journey toward greater inclusion by allowing us to directly nurture and support diverse talent, particularly in STEM fields.
“Our commitment to HBCUs is paramount to strengthening our talent pipeline and propelling the visibility of student-athletes, alumni, and each of the universities represented,” said Tarshena Armstrong, GM director of Diversity Marketing and Development.
Since beginning its relationship with the conference, GM has provided over $300,000 in scholarships and donations to support the schools and their students. GM has also partnered with Advancing Minorities’ Interest in Engineering (AMIE), a nonprofit allied with 17 HBCUs, to help the company recruit talent.
SWAC member schools include Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Alcorn State, Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, Grambling State, Jackson State, Mississippi Valley State, Prairie View A&M, Southern, Texas Southern and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
In 2022, GM dedicated a creative campaign to celebrate the past, present, and future of the SWAC, called “Make History.” The content was directed by the music video director Alan Ferguson, voiced over by legendary rapper Scarface, and featured former NFL quarterback Doug Williams, who played for SWAC member Grambling State, where he also later served as head coach.
