Today, The Cadillac Formula 1® Team announced that Sergio “Checo” Pérez will join the team as a driver for the 2026 racing season, alongside fellow F1 veteran Valtteri Bottas. Pérez, a current F1 standout with six Grand Prix wins under his belt, joined the elite racing series in 2011, and earned second place in the F1 world championship in the 2023 season.
To celebrate the announcement, GM News caught up with Pérez for a very quick conversation about his ambitions for the 2026 F1 season with Cadillac.
How does it feel to join a brand-new F1 team?
It’s very challenging. It’s something that really interested me, because it’s a project that’s all about looking forward. It’s about building the culture, sharing the first steps with this team that, I hope, will go and make history.
What will be the biggest challenge in Cadillac’s first F1 season?
Just building the group, the whole organization. If you think about how big the organizations are in F1, and how long it takes them to build, it’s quite a challenge. But I believe we’ve got very experienced people with a lot of track record, with a lot of abilities in this sport. I really believe that Cadillac can definitely be a surprise as an example of a newcomer in the sport.
What does it mean to you to be brought in to help develop the Cadillac F1 car?
It means a lot. It’s a huge responsibility, a huge task. I’m massively looking forward to it. I have all these years behind me that I’ve raced with so many different teams, and I want to put that all together into Cadillac.
