GM wins MotorTrend “Best Tech Award” for Super Cruise

2025-02-25

MotorTrend has recognized the General Motors Super Cruise system as the automotive industry’s best driver assistance program, as part of the publication’s first-ever “Best Tech Awards.”

MotorTrend said it launched the new awards to celebrate groundbreaking technologies and innovations that redefine the driving and vehicle ownership experience.

Introduced in 2017 as the world’s first truly hands-free Advanced Driver Assistance System for compatible roads, Super Cruise allows drivers to remove their hands from the wheel under specified conditions.

By the end of 2025, on select models, Super Cruise will be available on about 750,000 miles of roads across the U.S. and Canada. Since inception, GM customers have driven hundreds of millions of miles with Super Cruise, which is offered on more than 20 models.

Hands-off, eyes-on

Super Cruise-equipped GM vehicles use a network of in-car computers and sensors to provide the ease and convenience of hands-free driving. The system builds on Adaptive Cruise Control, which can accelerate or slow your vehicle to maintain a set following distance from the vehicle ahead, and lane sensing technology to help keep the vehicle within lane lines. In a Super Cruise-equipped vehicle, cameras, sensors, LiDAR map data and GPS in real-time help maintain control of your vehicle.

GM’s Driver Attention System detects head and eye positioning to help make sure the driver is facing the road with their eyes open, ready to steer manually if needed. If Super Cruise detects an inattentive driver, a series of visual, audio, or haptic (if equipped) alerts kick in. If the driver can’t take control for any reason, Super Cruise will slow the vehicle to a controlled stop, turning on the hazard lights and calling OnStar to bring assistance to the driver, if necessary.

Hands-free trailering

Super Cruise offers hands-free trailering on select models. When your properly equipped vehicle’s trailering system is activated, it will allow Super Cruise to recognize your compatible trailer and automatically lengthen the gap to the next vehicle ahead in traffic — giving you extra stopping distance if needed.

As fun and convenient as Super Cruise is, we’re just getting started. We’re continuing to update Super Cruise capabilities so that after drivers try it, they’ll never want to go back.

Automatic Lane Change and Lane Change on Demand are not available while trailering.
Always pay attention while driving and when using Super Cruise. Do not use a hand-held device. Requires active Super Cruise plan or trial. Terms apply.
