For generations, General Motors has been a proud part of the fabric of America. As the United States celebrates its 249th birthday, we’re reflecting on our shared moments and successes while we lay the groundwork for the next century.
Almost one million Americans depend on GM for their livelihoods, including our employees across 50 facilities in 17 states, suppliers, and dealers, as well as jobs indirectly supported by our operations.
At GM, we don’t just build cars—we help build careers and communities. That’s why we’re investing boldly in our U.S. manufacturing footprint, including $60 billion in the last five years alone. This summer, we announced some of the largest individual investments in our company’s history:
- $888 million in our Tonawanda Propulsion plant in Buffalo, New York, to support the next generation of GM’s V-8 engines for full-size trucks and SUVs. The investment is expected to support an estimated 1,800 indirect jobs throughout New York.
- $4 billion across three major assembly plants—Orion in Michigan, Fairfax in Kansas, and Spring Hill in Tennessee—to expand our U.S. production capacity for both internal combustion and electric vehicles. This investment will have a significant ripple effect at each of the sites, creating indirect jobs.
- Bringing full-size SUV and light-duty pickup truck production to Orion is expected to support an additional 42,300 jobs in Michigan over the next three years.
- Adding Chevrolet Equinox production to Fairfax Assembly is expected to create nearly 5,000 jobs in Kansas indirectly tied to GM.
- Additional vehicle allocation to Spring Hill Assembly is expected to spur creation of over 5,300 indirect jobs in Tennessee.
These investments are driving American innovation and global competitiveness. This added capacity gives us the flexibility to meet rising demand across our diverse portfolio—demand that made GM the growth engine for the U.S. auto industry in the first half of this year. We just posted our best first-half U.S. sales since 2018 with 7% growth in Q2 alone:
- GM is #1 in total sales and truck sales
- We’re now #2 in EV sales, with Chevrolet the #2 EV brand
- We posted our best first-half full-size pickup sales for Chevrolet and GMC trucks in 20 years, best full-size SUV sales since 2007, and best-ever crossover sales
Behind every one of these wins is a team of people who believe in our mission, our customers, and the country we call home.
“I'm a third-generation GM employee—my grandfather, father and brothers worked for GM, and my wife works here with me,” said Chuck LaRose, a 30-year GM team member at Tonawanda Propulsion. “After this investment was announced, my 21-year-old son is now considering a job with GM. We aren't just maintaining jobs for the next few years, we're creating jobs for the future generations too.”
Sheena Holt, a team leader at Spring Hill Manufacturing, shared similar pride. “This investment means a lot to me, for my family and my kids—knowing that I’m able to provide a good home, put them through school and their sports. But it also means a lot for the future of what we have here in Spring Hill. I’m excited to be a part of it.”
On this Independence Day, we salute the employees, partners, and communities who make it possible. We’re proud of where we’ve been—and even more excited about where we’re going.
