General Motors’s full-size trucks and SUVs have earned a reputation as strong, practical rigs. For nearly 20 years, GM has offered light-duty diesel power in these vehicles, writing a new chapter in the storied history of these full-size trucks. The latest available 3.0L Duramax diesel is the newest entry into that diesel light-duty lineage, blending confident towing capability with impressive highway range.
Even better, says Duramax Assistant Chief Design Engineer John Barta, these modern Duramax trucks are just a pleasure to drive.
“Anyone who has them for any period of time just says, ‘I love driving this thing. It’s so easy to drive around town,’” Barta notes. Much of that easygoing drivability stems from qualities inherent to diesel engines, like a huge amount of torque available from low rpms.

“The Duramax drives so effortlessly, given all the low-end torque,” Barta says. “At the end of the day, we get 95 percent of the maximum torque at 1500 rpm, without the engine screaming, without high rpms. It feels great. It’s great for driving around town without having to race the engine from Point A to Point B.”
While you could say the same for many torquey diesel engines, it’s through the relentless efforts of folks like Barta and his team that modern diesels like the 3.0L Duramax run so smoothly, quietly, and efficiently, while still producing all that power and efficiency.
With 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque, you’d expect the 3.0L Duramax to deliver strong towing performance. What you might not expect from a diesel are those tangible traits that can seem intangible on the road: running smooth and driving with an effortless ease. These qualities draw many customers to the 3.0L Duramax engine, Barta says, and keep them loyal Duramax customers for years.

Of course, the Duramax diesel delivers excellent range alongside its towing capability and easygoing road manners. For example, the 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe 2WD, equipped with the 3.0L Duramax, offers 624 miles of EPA-estimated highway range, plus best-in-class EPA-estimated miles-per-gallon (MPG) ratings of 22 mpg city, 26 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined.1 Whether it’s in a Tahoe or any other of GM’s full-size vehicles, this engine’s outstanding range means fewer fill-ups on family road trips and ultimately, less time at the pump overall.
For those who often haul with their full-size vehicle, Barta notes the 3.0L Duramax delivers impressive efficiency while putting out more torque than the 6.2L V8 (495 lb-ft to 460 lb-ft). That’s an important figure for drivers with trailers, or those who often travel with heavier payloads.

“This engine is great for anyone who has a moderate sized RV or another similar trailer, or someone who likes to take road trips,” Barta explained. “With so much torque available at a low RPM, the engine doesn’t have to work as hard when it’s hauling a heavy load or cruising down the highway."
The 3.0L Duramax also uses exhaust aftertreatment systems, and various advanced emission control technologies, to reduce tailpipe emissions. Chief among these is an Exhaust Gas Recirculation system that takes a small amount of the engine’s exhaust gas, cools it, and sends it back into the combustion chamber, providing cooler combustion temperatures and, in return, lower emissions. It’s tech like this, Barta says, that makes the 3.0L Duramax one of the cleanest diesel engines GM has ever built.
Capable, versatile, and quiet, GM’s 3.0L Duramax engine is proof that nearly two decades of diesel development pays off. For customers who want towing capability, industry-leading range, and an easygoing, smooth-running driving experience, GM's light-duty Duramax diesel delivers. The engine is available in the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe and Suburban, as well as the GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL.
