We continue to invest in our operations and our people as we reach the midpoint of 2023 with the announcement of another round of investments in four of our U.S. manufacturing facilities – Flint Assembly, Flint Metal Center, Fort Wayne Assembly and Arlington Assembly.
Earlier this month, we rolled out the announcements in a series of events at each of our facilities. In Flint, we celebrated $788 million for Flint Assembly to prepare the plant for the next generation of internal combustion engine (ICE) heavy-duty trucks and another $233 million in nearby Flint Metal Center for new stamping dies to support those same trucks. We are also ensuring production continues for our full-size light-duty trucks with a $632 million investment in Fort Wayne, Indiana Assembly and $500 million for full-size SUVs produced at our Arlington Assembly in Texas.
"Manufacturing is GM’s competitive advantage, and investing in our plants in Flint, Arlington and Fort Wayne to build next-generation ICE full-size pickups and SUVs strengthens that advantage,” said Gerald Johnson, executive vice president, Global Manufacturing and Sustainability. “These investments represent a commitment to our loyal customers and reflect the efforts of our dedicated plant teams.”
Our latest announcement comes at a time when GM is leading the industry in full-size truck and SUV sales. Our team members at the facilities are proud of the part they play in making these vehicles our customers love.
Flint is recognized as the birthplace of GM and we’re proud of our continued impact through our four local facilities – Flint Assembly, Flint Metal Center, Flint Tool and Die and Flint Engine Operations. From engines to components and final assembly of our heavy-duty trucks, we’re securing a strong future for our employees and the community.
“It was a good experience being there for the announcement and seeing the (Michigan) Governor (Gretchen Whitmer) at the plant, as well as our Local UAW 598 president and others. It felt good being there with everyone in the plant. It makes me think that I will be here for a while and that there are more jobs that will be here for a while. I’m just really looking forward to the future.”
- Cozetta Johnson, Flint Assembly production team member
Our 5,000+ team members at Arlington Assembly are dedicated to full-size SUV production. Their commitment to quality is reflected in the demand for the vehicles produced by Arlington Assembly. The investment of more than $500 million to update the paint shop, tooling and conveyor expansion ensures we will continue to produce these quality vehicles.
“The investment announcement was great news as it means I can retire in my home state. It puts our plant in a position to continue to lead in providing the best SUVs in the world to our customers. It also shows that our plant working 6 days a week for the last 8 years paid off.”
- Bobby Anderson, Arlington Assembly chassis department team member
For almost 40 years, our team in Fort Wayne have produced more than 1,300 trucks per day – in fact, the plant just celebrated the 10 millionth truck to be produced onsite! The additional investment of $632 million will support new conveyors, tooling and equipment in the body and general assembly areas. Our team can’t wait for the updates and what the future brings as we plan for the next generation of light-duty trucks.
“This announcement is good for our future. I can retire from here. People coming in after me can retire. It provides job security with good wages and good benefits.”
- Becky Guzman, team leader at Fort Wayne Assembly
Our customers appreciate the care and dedication our assembly team members put into the production of our ICE trucks and SUVs. Each time we invest, we know the long-term gains and stability of our workforce are important benefits of these operational updates. We look forward continuing to invest in our operations, our people and our drive to bring our entire team along our EV journey.
