Assembling EV battery packs with GM’s Kurt Kelty (VIDEO)

2025-06-05

Within RESS, battery components like modules and cooling systems are assembled into full EV battery packs before being transported to the plant’s vehicle assembly area and installed into vehicles. All of GM’s electric vehicle plants have an in-house RESS assembly area.

No one knows batteries better than Kurt Kelty, VP, battery, propulsion, and sustainability, at GM.

With over 30 years of battery industry experience, Kelty is a true battery pro. Watch the video below to observe Kelty as he tries his hand at assembling battery packs at the Factory ZERO assembly plant in Detroit-Hamtramck, Michigan – where GM builds the GMC HUMMER EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, and Cadillac ESCALADE IQ1.

While Kelty is no stranger to the RESS process, this was his first experience working hands on behind-the-scenes to bring our battery packs to life.

"The best part of this experience was going through each function and experiencing what our team members face every day,” Kelty says. “Little things that you might not think are a big deal can be a showstopper for a battery pack. It gave me renewed respect for our operators and what they do on the line.”

RESS is just one part of GM’s all-electric journey. As we secure a resilient supply chain and scale U.S. production, we’re delivering on a battery strategy that will move us into the future. Ultium Cells, GM’s joint venture with LG Energy Solution, is the largest OEM battery cell producer in North America. GM and LGES also recently confirmed plans commercialize lithium manganese-rich prismatic cells for future EV trucks and SUVs, bringing great range at a lower cost, and we have a new joint venture with Samsung SDI called Synergy.

At General Motors, our battery strategy is at the center of our vision for an all-electric future. The batteries that power our diverse EV portfolio come together in an area of our manufacturing plants called “Rechargeable Energy Storage System,” or RESS.
